Should you Replace Teeth with Implants?
When it comes to replacing your missing teeth, you have several options:
- mobile prosthesis
- dental tip
- dental implant
- as well as the option of doing nothing and complicating things unnecessarily
Currently, dental implant represents the best solution for replacing lost teeth, whether we are talking about one, several or all teeth! The dental implant generically defines the entire implant-prosthetic complex:
- The implant itself (an artificial root replaces the natural root )
- Prosthetic abutment – the connecting element between the implant and the artificial crown, on which it is anchored
- The artificial crown – replaces the natural crown of the tooth
The dental implant Park Ridge doctors perform looks identical and behaves the same as the natural tooth. As long as there is enough bone to insert it, the surgery is quite simple, predictable, safe and pain-free. The bone receives stimuli that maintain its volume and density over time. The only apparent disadvantage of dental implant treatment is the initial cost. However, in the case of a dental implant, a single crown is made instead of three (minimum) as in the case of a dental bridge. The fact that the implant preserves the integrity of the neighboring teeth in the long run also recommends it as the ideal treatment option in case of missing teeth.

How to Treat Sleep Apnea Surgically
According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, obstructive sleep apnea is a pathology that causes serious damage to health, with major risks, cardiovascular or neurological, through its long-term effects, substantially increasing the risk of sudden death. Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is characterized by repeated cessation of breathing during sleep, accompanied by repeated awakenings, loud snoring and diurnal symptoms represented by excessive drowsiness, chronic fatigue and decreased ability to concentrate and focus.
Treatment of the syndrome is necessary to reduce or eliminate respiratory events, and the associated risks (cardiovascular, metabolic, neurological) or accidents caused by daytime drowsiness.
The main treatment modalities are Positive Airway Pressure (PAP), mandibular advancement devices and sleep surgery.
The concept of sleep surgery is relatively recent, as the first specific surgical technique for the treatment of snoring appeared in the 1980s. Since then, this type of surgery has evolved tremendously, especially in the last 10 years, becoming an overspecialization in itself. The most important regions targeted by sleep surgery are the palatine veil, the lateral walls of the pharynx and the base of the tongue.
It is very important that the treatment of sleep apnea syndrome is thought out and established together with the patient, taking into account their preferences, particularities and needs. The new trend – the personalized and targeted treatment – is also applied in this field. For more on this see Hochstadter, Isaacson, Cherny, Dumanis & Associates Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Ltd.

What is Uvulo-Palato-Pharyngo-Plasty Surgery
Uvulo-Palato-Pharyngo-Plasty is a surgical technique commonly used to treat snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. The technique is represented by the surgical excision of the excessive mucosa of the palatine veil (soft palate) and theuvula, causing a reduction in their laxity and an increase in respiratory space. It can also be associated with tonsillectomy, when the tonsils are large and cause an additional narrowing of this space.
Determining the surgical indication is complex and takes into account several factors. The standard treatment for obstructive sleep apnea is conservative, being the treatment with CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure), with good results, in general. However, there are situations in which this treatment cannot be used, it is refused by patients or is simply not enough to improve sleep. In these cases, there are a number of surgical methods that can be applied.
Starting from the classical UPPP, a series of other procedures have been developed that have the same purpose, to stiffen and shorten the palatal veil, but also to increase the size of the oropharyngeal isthmus: UPPP with LASER, with radio frequency, velar stiffening procedures with different types of implant, radio frequency etc. Used as the only method of treatment, surgical techniques on the palatal veil have good short-term effects and are indicated for mild-moderate OSA and regular snoring. The results are much better when combined with other surgical techniques, on the nose or the base of the tongue, see https://www.precisionosi.com/contact-us/buffalo-grove-office/.
